In the summer of 1982, twelve-year-old Henry discovers something impossible washed onto the North Carolina coast after a hurricane: a strange metal surfboard shaped object unlike anything made on Earth.

The "shield" can hover, fly, disappear from sight, and protect its rider. Even stranger, it seems to have chosen Henry as its pilot.

His discovery pulls him into a mystery stretching far beyond Earth, involving a former pilot searching for what he lost, a hidden off-world Coalition, and enemies who believe the shield could shift the balance of power.

Part 1980s coming-of-age adventure, part science-fiction mystery, The Flying Shield follows an ordinary kid who discovers that being chosen and being ready are two very different things.
